Potty Training Your Dog

Potty training your dog can be an overwhelming experience for you and your family.  Many people have their own methods that they use and they all swear by them.  What works for you?  I remember when I was training my new puppy I was about to give up and a second later she decided to sit by the back door and bark. She starred at me as if to say “well, what are you waiting on I’ve got to go!”  I felt as if I had graduated and it was smooth sailing from here on out.  Well, I was somewhat right…but mostly wrong!

I soon realized that consistency was the key.  Even though I expected Preslee to give me a sign each time before she had to go outside, I have to admit that I wasn’t always ready myself.  There was the night when I was sleeping extremely well and at around 2:30 am she began to bark.  Just like a baby, you can always tell what a certain tone of a bark means.  It was very hard to get out of my nice warm bed to let her out but I knew I had to in order to get her trained.  Being consistent while potty training means sacrificing a few nights of peaceful sleeping.

I did reward Preslee while she was potty training.  I would give her a treat, or two, or three each time.  We also used a small kennel for a short period of time.  By using a kennel your dog will never want to sit in her own “business”.  I found this to be the easiest way for me.  I had so many people suggest their methods to me.

How did you potty train your dog?  What can you suggest to other readers about potty training?
